Down Pillows – What You Might Not Know May 19, 2009

You might not know the finer details of selecting the ideal down pillow.  While you may be familiar with the basic differences between down and feathers, is much more to find out about choosing a down pillow.

Did you know the outer casing of the pillow is called ticking?  It’s an important part of the pillow because it holds the down or feathers in.  The ticking should be 100 percent cotton with the highest thread count possible to keep tiny feathers from slipping out.

When an inch of down expands, the number of inches in space its takes is called fill power.  For the fluffiest puffy down pillow, select a fill power of about 600.  After all, you want that “ah” factor when you fall into bed!

Your position in life determines your pillow type - sleeping position, that is.  If you sleep on your belly, you need a soft down pillow.  Back sleepers do best with a medium pillow while side sleeper should select a firm one.

If you have allergies or budget concerns, there are cheap alternatives to down pillows.  You may want to check out down alternative pillows or a combo pillow with down and feathers.

Ideally, you should update your down pillows every six months to two years so they stay in shape.  Know their age by writing the date you buy them on the pillow tag.  Having the right down pillow means a better night’s sleep every night!

The Basics About Down Pillows May 18, 2009

A down pillow is a big, fluffy puff filled with feathers, right?  Not necessarily.  The seemingly subtle differences between pillows can make a major impact when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.  When you choose the right down pillow for your needs, a blissfully restful sleep is just moments away.  Let’s check out the basic types of down pillows to choose from.

Often less expensive feather pillows are mistaken for down pillows.  Feather pillows are filled with feathers with quills, which can be uncomfortable.  They provide plenty of support but are not as resilient as down pillows which is why they cost less.

Down pillows are filled with the fluff located under a bird’s feathers.  Down is nature’s own insulator on birds and when used in comforters or pillows.  A resilient down pillow also lets air circulate so your head does not perspire or get cold during the night while you sleep.  Because of these outstanding capabilities, down pillows are more expensive than feather pillows.

If you are allergic to down, alternative down pillows are another possibility.  Washable down pillows also work well for some folks with allergies because they can launder them frequently.

For the ultimate night’s sleep, treat yourself to a luxurious down pillow!

Down is considered one of the most luxurious types of bedding in the world.  When you see a bed with down pillows, blankets and comforters, you want to dive right in.  The unsurpassed comfort of down is thanks to the feathers.

Down bedding is filled with feathers.  Everyone appreciates the outstanding softness and insulation of down.  There is actual science behind the feathery comforts of that delightful down bedding you enjoy every sleepytime.

When it comes to a formal definition, feathers are the epidermal growth covering birds.  These complex structural organs on birds are predominantly made of proteins.  The feathers on birds keep them warm and insulate them from the elements.

Birds are recognized by the appearance of their feathers including texture, size and color.  Down feathers and vane feathers cover a bird’s body.  The vaned feathers have a hard central shaft with branches on both sides.  The softest down feathers are located beneath the vaned feathers.  Your down bedding might have either or both types of feathers.

The unique insular abilities of down comforters keep you warm in the winter and cool in the warmer weather.  For this reason, down bedding is perfectly comfortable for all seasons.  A down comforter is lightweight, portable and makes your bed the ultimate oasis for relaxation and sleep.

How to Determine Threads Counts? May 5, 2009

Thread count is the actual number of threads in one square inch of cloth. The higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns, more durable, more luxury, more breathable and contain a tighter weave to prevent leaking. That makes them the lightest and therefore able to have the maximum ability to loft. A minimum of 230 thread count is necessary to be considered leak proof, which prevents down and feathers from leaking. When choosing your down comforters, bedding sheets, down alternative comforters or down pillows always check your thread count and don’t let it be under a 230 thread count.
